From the point of view of chemical paleooceanography the theoretical fundamentals of formation of anoxic events, fixed in the sedimentological record of the present-day and ancient continental margins, are considered. The characteristics of the main types of anoxic sedimentary basins is given. It is shown that the ancient anoxic events have determined the formation of separate types of the upwelling black shale, hydrocarbon, phosphate-bearing, and cilicite-bearing formations. Anoxic black shale deposits of the Carpathian-Podolian-Black Sea ancient continental margin of Tethys are considered in the aspect of potential hydrocarbons generation.
