Research aim - study of the process of formation, evolution and modern state of historical-cultural phenomenon of Borderland on the local material, in particular - its institutionalization, place in cultural-symbolical space of national cultures and types and kinds of identities connected to it as well as corresponding forms of historical memory of the society. Research methods - social reconstruction; oral history; historical region study; cultural geography; system-structure and intercultural analysis of the phenomenon of national-cultural identity; historical-typological, comparative, historical-chronological and semiotic methods of elaboration of the empirical material. (September 2010, Freiberg, Switzerland), International conference "Kharkiv sociological readings - 2010" (November 2010, Kharkiv, Ukraine). As a result of the research completed the perceptions about Sloboda region were discovered by sociological survey (during the year 2009 the questioning of the first-year students 790 in number was carried out in 8 Kharkiv's high educational institutions), the analysis of contemporary theories and methodological approaches in studying the Borderland was conducted.
