It is discovered that more productive cultivars have more powerful photosynthetic apparatus at different levels of his structural organization, in particular greater amount of chloroplasts in cells, enhanced content of chlorophyll in one chloroplast, higher quantity of reaction centers of PSI and PSІІ in relation to antenna complexes, greater leaves area and chlorophyll concentration in leaves during a reproductive period. The new high-yielding varieties of winter wheat have also enhanced intensity of photosynthetic СО2 assimilation per unit of leaf surface, operating efficiency of PSІІ photochemistry and photorespiration activity. Their gain is related to greater amount and activity of key enzyme of photosynthesis - Rubisco. It was discovered an important role of xanthophylls cycle and antioxidant enzymes of chloroplasts in adjusting photosynthesis energy balance at optimum and stress conditions. It is showed that higher photosynthesis intensity of flag leaf and longer maintenance of its functional activity during grain filling in high-yielding varieties are related to superior sink capacity of ear. The data obtained indicated that the grain productivity of modern varieties is limited by assimilate supply in a reproductive period and can be improved by increasing of photosynthesis activity.
