Mechnikov National University popup.description2 Sea-level changes in the Black Sea were gradual and oscillating during the last 20 ka. The sea rose from ca. -100 m at the LGM to ca. -20 m by the end of the Late Glacial, reaching its present level in the Late Holocene. At the LGM (27-17 ka BP), Late Paleolithic settlements were located at some distance from the coastline in subaerial deep river valleys that were later flooded by the Late Neoeuxinian transgression (16-13 ka BP). Today, these valleys may contain submerged sites crucial for understanding cultural changes in the Northern Black Sea region because such information is entirely lacking elsewhere. The Mediterranean transgression and migration of its biota into the Black Sea began ca. 9.5 ka BP and proceeded in a gradual and oscillating manner in response to eustatic signals from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Mathematical modeling of Black Sea level change based on physical laws explains all major events of the Late Pleistocene-Holocene and is in a good agreement with geological data. Mathematical modeling based on instrumental observations over the last 200 years suggests that sea level will rise between 480 and 498 cm between 1992 and 2016.
