The object of study is the elastic fields generated during initiation and propagation of cracks in structural materials under the influence of quasi static loading. Analytical expressions that enable evaluation of the size of a brittle inclusion that cracks inside the matrix have been derived on the basis of the analysis of the known analytical solutions of the problems regarding stress distribution in the vicinity of inclusions located inside elastic-plastic matrix and solutions of the dynamic problems regarding initiation of a mode-I penny-shaped crack.
