The contributions and the temperature regions of physical and chemical mechanisms of sorption have been separated. It is shown that irradiation causes a sharp increase in the quantity of H2 chemically sorbed by the CNT bundles. The chemically sorbed hydrogen enhances the thermal expansion of the carbon nanotubes by suppressing the bending vibrational modes whose contribution to the thermal expansion is negative.
