The effect of radioactive irradiation of bundles of nanotubes with gamma quanta in the H2 atmosphere upon the radial thermal expansion of the CNT bundles and their sorption of hydrogen has been investigated for the first time experimentally. The contributions and the temperature regions of physical and chemical mechanisms of sorption have been separated. It is shown that irradiation causes a sharp increase in the quantity of H2 chemically sorbed by the CNT bundles. The chemically sorbed hydrogen enhances the thermal expansion of the carbon nanotubes by suppressing the bending vibrational modes whose contribution to the thermal expansion is negative.
