The marker antigens and the cytochemical features of the leukemic stem cells (LSC) have been shown to correlate with the corresponding properties of the progenitor cells of normal myelopoiesis. The genetic abnormalities revealed in various forms of AML are reflected in the phenotype of the cells constituting the pathological clone. Therefore, the marker phenotypic features of LSC (cytochemical properties, the presence of lineage-specific antigens and stem cell antigens) should supplement the set of the methods required for AML diagnosis.
