Developed are the thermal zone and design of the crucible with capillary system which allow to control the radial and axial temperature gradients in the growth zone. It is shown that the hardness of sapphire depends on its crystallographic orientation and is the highest in the direction perpendicular to the planes (10-10) and (11-20).
