Subject of investigation: the impact of hybridization, hemiclonal inheritance and polyploidization on speciation. Aim of the project: investigation of unorthodox mechanisms of speciation (not bound to gradual accumulation of differences between isolated populations): the establishment of mechanisms of the reticulate evolution and evolutionary significance of hemiclonal inheritance. Methods: - field sampling of material, - morphometric description, along with variance, discriminatory and regressive analysis of its results, - flow cytometry of DNA, - isolation and analysis of distribution of cytogenetic (related to the morphology of the lamp brush chromosomes) and genetic (nuclear and mitochondrial sequence) markers of various forms; - skeletochronological study of the population age structure and viability of separate forms,- analysis of the relationship of distribution of species and population systems with the environmental features of habitats; - simulation modeling of processes in natural populations. Scientific output: - evidence on unorthodox mechanism of speciation in the Bufo viridis complex and Pelophylax esculentus complex, - new data on the biodiversity of these species complexes; - description of the Seversko-Donetsky center of diversity of water frogs; - justification for consideration of hemiclonal population systems as separate group of biosystems, - a model of transformation of hemiclonal population systems, - creation of conception, considering the hemiclonal inheritance in interspecfic hybrids as adaptation of the parental species to a limited interspecific recombination.
