It is shown that for metals, mechanical stability is, really, stability of plastic state, which, in turn, is determined by stability in the ensemble of the crack nuclei. Within the framework of the model proposed, two main microscopic factors, which predetermine regularities of metal transition from ductile to brittle state are ascertained.
