It was found the reactive ball milling of magnesium with the different carbon allotropic modification (graphite, multiwall nanotubes, ultra dispersive diamonds and amorphous carbon powder produced by electric breakdown of hydrocarbon liquids) leads to increase hydrogen sorption rate. The fastest hydrogen sorption during reactive ball milling of magnesium takes place when graphite or amorphous carbon powders with a high specific surface area are used. A hydrogenation rate during ball milling of magnesium and graphite is strongly affected by initial specific surface area of the graphite powder.
