The theoretical research is focused on transport of particles within a microchannel due to the combined effect of hydrodynamic and electrostatic forces. Research objectives were achieved through the application of various techniques of mathematical physics and numerical methods for the solution of partial differential equations comprising the core of the ensuing models. A new microfluidic system consisting of three microchannels connected with a reservoir (pool) has been proposed and studied theoretically. This system allows precise flow control to be achieved during the immobilisation of living cells or mixing/dilution of analytes. A new mathematical model of focusing of cells or particles in an electrophoretic microchannel of rectangular cross-section was proposed. Numerical solution of the corresponding problem of diffusion-convection-migration transport in a microchannel allowed the determination of the ranges of main geometrical, hydrodynamic and electrical parameters corresponding to best focusing of living cells.
