Object of inquiry – to analyze main principles and methods for elaborating starting, progress and final tests, to study peculiarities of grammar and lexical content of tests for diagnosing students’ knowledge in foreign languages at different stages of teaching. Methods - dialectical, logical and general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction and others. Results of inquiry – existing methods for elaborating various linguistic tests were analyzed, classifications of the above tests were studied depending on their purpose and aims of testing, the problems concerning procedures for test elaborating, lexico-grammatical content, structure, approbation and processing of tests were studied. Starting, progress and final tests for diagnosing foreign languages learning for the students of different directions of teaching were elaborated. Approbation and processing tests involved showed that testing activates students, makes teaching process diverse, allows to revise organization of teaching foreign languages. Area of application – researches and elaborations in the field of the humanities.
