The goal is an evaluation of the manifold impact of the ongoing socio-cultural change on urban spaces, collective memories and group identities of contemporary Ukrainian townspeople, as well as preparation of policy recommendations for public cultural policy and memory policy in Ukraine. During the initial phase, a theoretical/methodological framework for the study was delineated, and its concrete subjects were defined and described, namely, a number of towns in Central, Western and Eastern Ukraine. The initial research on selected towns resulted in a series of descriptive chapters for the study report that overview the changes in the urban space and ‘les lieux de memoire’ in the towns of Kaniv, Korsun, Zvenyhorodka, Vatutine, Alchevsk and Theodosia.
