The following satellite data were used in the study: MODIS, Landsat-5, AWiFS, RapidEye and LISS-III. Multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and decision tree were chosen as classifiers. Crop areas were assessed using ground samples only and using regression estimator with satellite classification data as co-variate. Obtained final area estimates were compared with official statistics provided by the State Committee of Statistics of Ukraine. Cost-efficiency analysis of using satellite data for crop area estimation was made.
