Purpose of research is study of unsteady turbulent processes structure in the flow aerodynamics of Darrieus and Savonius rotors of vertical-axis wind turbines. Results and novelty. Analysis of results of calculations of numerical simulation of unsteady flow around a rotating single blade and the Darrieus rotor with different number of blades and geometric parameters showed that the viscous and dynamic effects play an important role in the Darrieus rotor operation. Phases of generation, growth and breakdown of vortices in different positions on the trajectory of the blade were defined. It is determined that the main torque created on the windward plot of the blade trajectory Flow field visualization during the wind turbine rotor operation was received on the basis of full-size and computational experiments. The dependences of the basic aerodynamic, dynamic and energetic parameters of wind turbines from tip speed ratio and Reynolds number were determined. Reconstruction of flow field and main stages of the formation of vortex structures in the flow around Savonius and Darrieus rotors were performed as a result of the studies of aerodynamics of vertical-axis wind turbines with Darrieus and Savonius rotor (startup and operation modes). On the mode startup the coefficient of static torque of Savonius rotor higher than the Darrieus rotor was shown. As shown by calculations, the main contribution to the torque of vertical-axis wind turbines on the operating mode was carried out of the Darrieus rotor. Fraction of the Savonius rotor constitutes only a few percent of the total torque. The presence of Savonius rotor in central part of vertical-axis wind turbines leads to significant shading leeward areas of the blade trajectory of Darrieus rotor and to reduce generated torque.
