The developed approach is based on the receipt of super fine sol by acid hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. Sol deposition on the inner surfaces of tubular membranes with subsequent drying produces functionalized membranes with thiol groups of the pore surfaces. This technique can be applied to form thin polysiloxane sol-gel layers on macroporous ceramic supports. Obviously, introduction of functionalizing component during synthesis helps to achieve uniform membrane modification. Once created, the hybrid organic-inorganic functional layer can selectively remove metal ions from aqueous solutions. Synthesized samples of modified membranes showed high efficiency (99,5-90%) in removing silver ions from aqueous solutions in the recycling process, when the degree of permeate withdrawal was 10-80%. Optimization of the filtration speed through the modified membrane can increase the degree of removal of heavy metals from water. Meanwhile, the modified samples retain high water performance, typical for high performance ultrafiltration membranes. However, contrary to high efficiency in removing silver ions, modified membranes showed worse sorption capacity to cadmium. Cadmium (II) ions are effectively absorbed by modified membrane only during the initial period of filtration; saturation of the modifying layer is rapid. This indicates a need for further optimization of modification conditions and composition of functionalizing layer to enhance its selective properties considering heavy metal ions.
