Galkin Physics and Engineering Institute of National Academy of Science of the Ukraine popup.description2 The experimental studies of both the embrittlement tendency of a number of amorphous Al-(Ni,Fe,Co)-(Gd,Y,Nd) alloys and the thermal- and deformation-induced processes of Al nanocrystals nucleation have been carried out by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, the measurements of electrical resistance and microhardness, differential scanning calorimetry and bending tests. The aim of the work is the establishment of the mechanisms of embrittlement and Al nucleation under thermal and deformation influence. It has been shown that alloying by neodymium results in decreasing of the embrittlement tendency. It has been found that that the main structural relaxation process leading to amorphous Al-based embrittlement is lowering of the free volume concentration, while the presence of the nanoscale heterogeneities has a relatively small effect on the plasticity level. The quantitative estimations of the changes in nucleation rate of Al in amorphous Al87Ni8Y5 alloy have been made for the first time and it has been found that the rapid increase of the nucleation frequency in the temperature range of 6 K up to 2 1021 m-3s-1 during heating followed by continuous decreasing down to 1.5 1020 m-3s-1 at temperature of the second crystallization stage onset. The results obtained open the possibilities for development of the amorphous alloys compositions with decreased tendency to embrittlement as well as for the control of nanocrystallization process.
