It was established that the high rate of photosynthesis both in optimal and in stressful conditions is determined by the activity of the primary carboxylating enzyme rubisko. More intensive use of energy cofactors in the processes of CO2 assimilation in new varieties causes the maintenance more active electron transport in chloroplast thylakoids and more efficient use of light energy in photochemical reactions. New varieties are characterized by increased activity of xanthophylls cycle - one of the main mechanisms for regulation the distribution of photochemical and nonphotochemical use of absorbed light energy in chloroplasts. This provides better protection of the photosynthetic apparatus to photodamage by strong light and minimizes the waste of energy due to heat dissipation at lower light intensities.
