The elicitor decreased disease development in wheat and tomato plants. This elicitor does not inhibit the pathogens themselves but induces plant innate disease resistance. Its protective effect depends upon its protein content. Time-course of superoxide anion (О2-.) accumulation in protein- and carbohydrade elicitor-treated Allium cepa cells was analysed. It was shown that 1mM salicylic acid inhibited catalase in Allium cepa cells. As a result hydrogen peroxide was accumulated in A. cepa cells and its small concetrations served as a signal for elicitation of plant defence responses.
