Optimal obtaining methods for the samples were determined. Optical and luminescence characteristics of tantalates in UR and visible ranges were studied. The brightest luminescence is observed in YTaO4 and LuTaO4. On the basis of the carried out research it was concluded that rather high scintillation output and fast luminescence attenuation in conjunction with non-hygroscopicity and very high density allows considering non-activated orthotantalates as potentially prospective materials for high energy physics.
