The generalized dependence of the hardness which is normalized to Young's modulus from grain size was obtained. Technologies of magnetron sputtering and vacuum-arc evaporation were optimized in order to get high-quality nanostructured films and nano-compositions. The physical nature of temperature changes in the system "film-substrate" was carefully explored. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of nano-structured materials the idea of using "useful" additives and alloying elements in grain boundary was validated. These results could be used in fundamental investigations of physics and also in application studies which are devoted to films and multilayered compositions development.
