Kholodny Institute of Botany NASU popup.description2 The object of the study were plants growing under natural conditions at different layers of the broad-leaved forest. The aim of the work was to evaluate the efficiency of photosynthetic energy conversion in plants of different layers of the broad-leaved forest as the primary stage of accumulation and transformation of energy in forest biocoenose. For this the characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus of plants that occupy different layers of broad-leaved forest were studied in order to determine the intensity of photosynthesis of typical for each layer species in various growing conditions. Methods: Biochemical, spectral, and fluorescence methods and physicochemical analysis. As a result of the work the structural and functional properties of the photosynthetic apparatus of some species of maple - Acer platanoides L., Acer campestre L., Acer negundo L. and Acer tataricum L. were determined. The interspecific and intraspecific patterns and differences in the structural characteristics of leaves depending on lightening were found. In particular, we study the density of stomata location and venation, as well as distribution of areoles. It was shown that the level of phenotypic plasticity of anatomical features is higher in shade-tolerant species of the genus Acer. It was shown that the adaptation of plants of the top (of the genus Acer) and medium ( Prunus padus, Corylus i Polygonatum multiflorum) layers of the forest to the lighting conditions involved violaxanthin cycle, and the lutein cycle is active in leaves of the upper layer. It is shown that the role of chlorophyllase in plants of lower layer (Asarum europaeum, Convallaria majalis, Aegopodium podagraria, Polygonatum multiflorum) in adapting pigment pool to different growth conditions is different on its contribution to the adaptive response to changes in light regime in plants in the upper layers. Obtained fundamental scientific results can be used for monitoring vegetation in anthropogenic transformation of the environment.
