Vernadsky University popup.description2 The object under research are the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the interrelation between emotional and cognitive processes. The subject of the research is as follows: the changes in the ongoing EEG rhythmical activity and the patterns of event-related potentials (ERP) in adults and children when they perceive emotiogenic stimuli, specifics of neuronal activity in cat's brain structures which take significant part in processing of emotional and cognitive information. The project's goal is to analyze negative changes in emotional and higher cognitive functions and their interaction in children and adults; to elaborate novel methods of diagnostics and correction for the mentioned functions with use of the EEG-based feedback techniques with the colour and sound stimulation. Methods of the research: recording EEG potentials and other psychophysiological indices of man; EEG impulse activity of neurons in cat. We have found the statistically significant difference between the amplitude-temporal and spatial indices of the event-related potentials under conditions of emotionally charged (regardless of being positive or negative) and neutral visual stimuli. The ERP patterns correlated with some personality traits. We have first discovered the difference in the ERP amplitude-temporal indices between the low- and high-anxious children; the ongoing EEG indices statistically differed with regard to the level of anxiety. To reduce the level of anxiety in highly-anxious children we used a specially designed experimental set including an electroencephalograph and a portable computer, different EEG-feedback protocols, and assessed their efficiency. The final psychological testing showed significant anxiety level drop and "attention precision" growth in children after they took part in a series of EEG-feedback sessions. The sound-based EEG-feedback in wakeful cats resulted in increase of the ratio between spectral powers of alpha and theta EEG rhythms, and rise of discharge frequency in noradrenergic and serotonergic neurons that testifies to their certain part in modifying the animal's functional state.
