The purpose of the study is to determine physical regularities and technological modes of electrodischarge treatment of suspensions to obtain high-quality initial powder mixture. It is proved that most modern methods of synthesis and activation of initial powders for carbide steels are characterized by oxidization of powder particles, their contamination with cutting metal, and also high energy consumption. It is shown that the high-voltage electric discharge in a suspension of metal-carbon powders in a hydrocarbon fluid is devoid of such flaws, and also can lead to changes of a phase composition of the powder following the formation of additional disperse strengtheners, such as carbides and intermetallics. Theoretical analysis is conducted for the processes of high-voltage electric discharge in a suspension of metal-carbon powders in a hydrocarbon fluid, the methods for experimental and theoretical determination of its electric, energy and hydrodynamic characteristics is made. It is determined that for efficient dispersion of initial micropowders containing Fe and Ti the peak pressure of a compression-tension wave should exceed 350 МPа. The modes of EH treatment are chosen responsible for efficient dispersion for which the working voltage should be no less than 50 kV, and inductance no more than 0.7 µH. Thermodynamic analysis of the system "discharge channel-suspension" has shown that the condition for the beginning of phase transitions is kerosene decomposition in the discharge channel with ormation of carbon and transition of the treatable metals to the gas phase on the interface of a plasma channel - hydrocarbon fluid and on the interface between the particles and the plasma and the particles against each other at temperature no less than 3600 К.
