Kyrdyumov Institute for Metall Physics of N.A.S. of Ukraine popup.description2 The effect of different carbon allotropes on the hydrogen sorption kinetics during reactive ball milling in hydrogen gas has been investigated. The structure, phase composition, thermal stability and the carbon distribution peculiarity for the synthesized composites have been searched. It was found that reactive ball milling of magnesium with the different carbon allotropes leads to a significant increase of hydrogen sorption rate in contrast to pure (undoped) magnesium. Among the additives, amorphous carbon and fine-grained graphite powders promote more fine pulverization of magnesium under ball milling in comparison with other carbon allotropes. Thin carbon layer forms on the surface of magnesium particles during ball milling of the Mg-C powder mixtures due to drastic mechanical destruction of carbon materials. This layer prevents mechanical fusion of the magnesium crystallites. Hereupon the significant size reduction of individual magnesium hydride particles takes place. This results in simultaneously involving a much greater amount of magnesium into chemical interaction with hydrogen. The hydrogen sorption rate considerably raises too.
