Study objective: The study objective was to reveal the effect of antioxidants on cellular bioenergetic pathways and to estimate the efficacy of their application for correction of mitochondrial dysfunction in children residing on radiation-contaminated territories. Substantiation of methodology and strategy of the most effective tools application on correction of mitochondrial dysfunction. Study methods: Clinical examination, laboratory research, instrumental examination, statistics. Results and novelty: Administration of antioxidant medication (i.e. quercetin) in combination to basic therapy in children having disorders of cellular bioenergetics had resulted in a positive therapeutic effect through the incidence decrease of clinical signs of mitochondrial dysfunction. There was no decorporation effect of quercetin administration. Intake of quercetin for the correction of cellular energy status was of mild efficacy predisposing however to shortening of biochemical signs of mitochondrial dysfunction i.e. decrease of lactic and pyruvic acids in capillary blood under the controlled physical load, both with an intensity of the free-radical processes in serum and red blood cells. Positive changes of bioelectric activity and functional capacity of skeletal muscles were found. Phagocytic function of neutrophil granulocytes was amplified under the quercetin administration. No any positive impact of quercetin intake was found on mitochondrial dysfunction within cardiovascular system. Finally the methodology of administration of energy-tropic medications was substantiated to correct the mitochondrial dysfunction in children under the chronic incorporation of 137Cs.
