The goal of the research is development of the experimental ferrocarbon alloys with the specified gradient of composition and properties obtained by means of the DCSA treatment. The main methods of the research were metallographic methods, electron scan microscopy, x-ray structure analyses, determination of the microhardness gradient, gravimetric corrosion testing. For the first time has been proven that formation of the carbide layer can follow two main pathways: by chemical reaction that takes place directly on the surface; and by diffusion into the substrate with the subsequent bonding into carbide. For the first time the analysis of the carbide layer self-organization ability during diffusion surface alloying of ferrocarbon alloys with the elements like Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, W, Mo has been conducted. It has been proven that besides the DCSA treatment with chromium, the process can follow self-organization mechanism during surface alloying with Mo, W and V. The new resource saving technology of diffusion surface alloying with chromium nitride Cr2N (or nitride with the mixed composition (Cr, Fe)2N), where the mass share of chromium changes from 77 to 94%) has been developed. For the first time the new complex methods of heat treatment (which include the DCSA treatment stage) of the main grades of construction and tool steels have been developed.
