The objective – to learn the regularities of graphite nitrate modification by way of alteration of anion salvation within interfacial space by different solvents; to obtain stable modified graphite intercalation compounds. The methods of testing: synthetic methods, proximate analysis, determination of expanded volume, X-ray phase analysis. The procedures have been worked out for obtaining of graphite nitrates with specified stage of intercalation and for their modification by organic solvents. The technique for assessment of stability of modified graphite intercalation compounds was developed. Graphite nitrate modification by different kinds of organic solvents was systematically studied. It has been ascertained that, by thermal stability of products, used modifiers of graphite nitrate could be divide into three groups: co-intercalating the modifiers of the first group, high stability is reached immediately after treatment by modifier; the second group, for stabilization, requires subsequent treatment by water; the third group gives extremely labile compounds of graphite nitrate. By X-ray phase analysis, the structure of graphite nitrate co-intercalation compounds with organic modifiers has been studied. The structural models of obtained compounds were suggested on the base of analysis of reflection locations and intensities. It has been found than unstable compounds are characterized by structural transformations in the course of time with decrease of interfacial space that is typical for graphite beta-nitrate. For thermo-stable products, the structure with immutable interfacial space is, as a rule, formed straight during synthesis. Mostly, the value of interfacial distance is about 0.66 nm; this is peculiar to graphite beta-nitrate and attests about arrangement of intercalant molecules in parallel to graphene layers. Obtained data could be used both for production of high-quality thermally stable thermo-expandable graphite intercalation compounds and for exfoliation of unstable compounds producing either graphenes or graphene-like products with high yield on the basis of natural graphites mined in Ukraine.
