The objective – to carry out systematical study of connection between composition/structure of forming graphite oxide and synthesis conditions. The methods of testing: synthetic methods, NMR, IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM as well as functional analysis according to data of iodometric and volumetric analysis when titrating by diazomethane. For more precise detailing of proposed mechanism, quantum-chemical computations have been used. The mechanism was proposed, which describes an interaction of active particles of synthetic system with carbon matrix of intercalated graphite and includes hydroxyl-radical attack on cation-radical centers of intercalant. It has been shown that the first stage of functionalization is origination of peroxide and epoxide groups on the surface of graphite planes; these groups are transformed further into hydroxyl, ketone, and carboxyl functions. The deadline quantity has been ascertained experimentally for potassium chlorate carried in the synthesis of graphite oxide as an oxidizing agent; an excess of the latter does not raise the yield of end product but leads only to loss of a substance through the its oxidation into gaseous products. The interaction of graphite oxide surface with micelles of cation-active surfactant was studied on model compounds. The results could be used in the development of ways of stabilization of graphite oxide and graphene micro-suspensions in water.
