Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 Traditional steels 14HN3A and 20HN3A, which are used in the design of rolling cutter drill bits, have a limited weldability, and in some cases the properties of welded joints metal in these steels do not meet the requirements for high speed drilling. At combination of steels 40HN and 14HN3A in the design of diamond drilling bits, the bits production method becomes even more complicated. With the increase of bits dimensions and at the same time of welded thicknesses, the probability of small cracks formation in welded joints also increases, that leads to the failure of their hydro-density and reduction of service life. In order to improve the performance of welded joints, the technology of electron-beam welding with welded joints' metal modification was developed. The construction of insert modificators, which does not break the quality of bit components assembly, does not affect the accuracy of the butt joint tracking system and, at the same time, provides the formation of crystallization crack-free welds was suggested. The best material for the modification of rolling cutter drill bit welds proved to be austenitic stainless steel 10H18N10T 0.2 mm thick, and for diamond bit welds - inserts of zirconium foil 0.2 mm thick as well. The width and length of insert modificators depends on the type of welded bits and can vary within the range of 15 ... 20 mm in width and 45 ... 70 mm in length. Drill bits were assembled with insert modificators on the devices, which provide the positioning of butt joints with a deviation of not more than 0.1 mm from the vertical. Assembling and welding devices have been tested within the term of project implementation and are recommended for industrial use. The parameters of EBW modes for drill bits, according to which the computer technology programs using welds modificators were compiled, were developed. The developed welding programs were tested at electron-beam welding of the drill bits' trial batch. Integrated studies of the quality and properties of the modified bits' welded joints were conducted. Both the rolling cutter drill bit joints and cracks-free diamond bit joints with a tensile strength of 95 - 98% ultimate tensile strength of the base metal were received. All design and technological developments are applied in the updated (modernized) equipment KL 147 for electron-beam welding of drill bits.
