The river of Kalmius has been elected as an area of pilot deployment of the Automated Biomonitoring Complex (ABC), the peculiarities and dynamics of the pollutions in this area have been studied. The Agreements for technical assistance for Ecological Safety Directorate with the Donetsk City Council as well as Cooperation Agreement with the State Directorate for Preservation of the Environment in Donetsk Region have been established for further tests and extension of the ABC. The current situation with the development of environmental monitoring systems in Ukraine has been analyzed and the background for the ABC development has been defined. It has been found that the convenient method for estimation of the ecological state of water resources can be the phytoplankton fluorescence analysis, while that for the air quality can be a method based on peroxide oxidation of the lipids and chemiluminescence in basidiomycetes. The sensitivity thresholds of the parameters of the lipids peroxide oxidation on the phenol content have been determined. The guidelines for further studies on physical and chemical parameters of life of the inferior plants and basidiomycetes for their use as bioindicators have been determined as well as the strategy for development of dedicated methods of signal processing in the ABC. The general concept of the ABC was determined on the base of the known automated systems for water biomonitoring using the algae fluorescence analysis. A new research laboratory of Biophysical Methods in Ecology has been established for these studies and interaction with educational process. A special phytoplankton fluorescence analyzer has been purchased for the needs of this Laboratory. The efficient utilization of the research capabilities of this Laboratory will be also broadened by means of the established Agreement with the Donetsk Botanical Garden of the NASU for the scientific cooperation. The results of the studies accomplished include 3 papers, 18 conference reports, one patent, 2 MSc theses, 3 graduates and 9 course works.
