Aim of the investigations: to assess the influence of radioactive isotopes on the functional activity of bone marrow progenitor cells of experimental animals. Methods: in vivo cell culture of hematopoietic cells, light microscopy, statistical methods. Theoretical and practical results: Integrated assessment of the components comprising hematopoiesis was performed, from stem cells and the closest progeny (hematopoietic and circulating progenitor cells) on out to mature cells in the organism of irradiated animals. Obtained results of the morphological and functional features of the rat hematopoiesis upon internal exposure to Strontium-90 can be implemented as a basis for future interpretations of the radiation induced damage indicators of the population inhabiting contaminated territories. Detected peculiarities of the hematopoiesis in the laboratory animals internally exposed to Strontium-90 isotopes may serve as early warning signs of the possible onset of blood system disorders in the people exposed to ionizing radiation. Novelty: analysis of hematopoietic system functioning on the level of stem cells and hematopoietic progenitor cells under the influence of Strontium-90 was performed. Characteristics of the radiation influence, both chronic internal and acute external irradiation, on peripheral blood and bone marrow indices and hematopoietic progenitor cells. The tendency of increased colony-forming efficiency of eosinophilic lineage was revealed in cell culture in vitro of irradiated hematopoietic cells. Efficacy of implementation: obtained results can be implemented as a basis for further interpretations of the radiation induced damage indicators of the population inhabiting contaminated territories.
