Semi preparative quantities of abzymes possessing sialidase activity were obtained, they were purified and characterized. It was shown that treatment of cells with sialidase-abzymes induces their desialylation. Treatment of apoptotic cells with sialidase-abzymes results in the enhanced phagocytosis of dying cells by human monocyte-derived macrophages.
