The methodology is based on semiological analysis of urban space, theories of collective memory, discourse analysis, national /cultural identity theories. Research material on urban space and memory culture (academic studies, pictures, media-publications, books on local history etc.) from seven selected towns in various parts of Ukraine were collected and analyzed. Introductory chapters on the approaches to analysis of symbolic space, memory culture and local identities, as well as chapters on the shaping of urban spaces during the Soviet period, on post-Soviet transformation of urban space in Ukrainian towns were written. Also overview chapters on the development of urban space, memory places and the shaping of local identities in each of the seven selected towns were prepared. Preliminary conclusions for the study were formulated as well.
