Fundamental principles of classification and integral assessment of ecological status of the river systems have been developed, based on biological markers with regard to ecoregions and using approaches, declared by the Water Framework Directive EU (WFD). On this basis for the first time integral assessment has been carried out of ecological status of the plain and mountainous rivers using the comparative approach taking into account all blocks (hydrobiological, hydrological and hydrochemical), brought together into the unified assessment table RQBA with wide range of the marker descriptors. Additionally to the WRD demands the assessment system was complemented by parasitological and ecotoxicological descriptors.
