In connection with the planned decommissioning of the cooling pond of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) the assessment of the current radiation and ecological state of coastal natural systems was performed in order to obtain basic background information for future monitoring of the situation and assessment of the risks that may occur on land during and after draining of the water. On the shores of the cooling pond three plots (200 ? 200 m) have been selected and their radio-ecological characterization was held, including a description of the landscape, plant and animal systems, the characteristics of the spatial distribution of dose equivalent rate, as well as the parameters of the accumulation of 90Sr, 137Cs, 239,240 Pu and 238Pu in different objects of coastal ecosystem (water, sediment, riparian vegetation and land, once the personal group of small terrestrial vertebrates). The estimation of radiation risk for the terrestrial biota in the area of the cooling pond was held.
