Registration Date 15-05-2012 Organization Institute of Surface Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 The work was focused at chemical design of functional nanostructured silica coatings at the surface of aluminium and its alloys for environmentally benign protection from corrosion in accordance with requirements of Directive 2000/53/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 September 2000 and the Council Decision 2005/673/EC of 20 September 2005 which limit application of hexavalent chromium in anticorrosion coating available on the market of the European Union after July 2007. The compositions for the synthesis of hydrophobic sol-gel silica coatings by hydrolysis-condensation of organofuctional silanes in the presence of the acidic catalyst were developed. It has been found out that the synthesis of the stable hydrophobic coatings (contact angle of water above 80o) requires the thermal treatment at 100 oC for acceleration of the hydrolysis-condensation processes. The studies of the structure of silica nanocoatings with scanning electron microscope JEOL 840JXA equipped with microanalysis, which were performed in the Institute of Materials of Marmara Research Center (TUBITAK), have shown that interaction of HCl and H2O, present in the compositions, with the surface of 3003 H14 aluminium alloy resulted in the formation of Al(OH)3-xClx species of 20-40 micron size and coatings of defect nature. The results of the laboratory testing of the corrosion protection properties of the samples at 40 oC by partial immersion in aqueous 3.5 % NaCl solution have shown that coatings, which contain phenyl functional groups in their structure, have high hydrophobicity accompanied by high continuity and exhibit maximum anticorrosion performance.
