The aim is to illuminate socio-cultural aspects of European civilization evolution during the ages of Antiquity, Middle Ages and Early Modern Time. Investigations were held mostly in the methodology of intellectual history, videlicet the history of political, ethical, historical, geographical and juridical thought. Special interest was attracted to the transitional periods of European history, intercultural and intercivilizational connections. Important aspects of European spiritual culture were uncovered: formation of Christian conceptions of a man and of a society; historical ideas of pagan and Christian historians of IV-V cent. J. Fortescue idea of "the mixed monarchy" was analyzed. Important aspects of Th. Hobbs and A. Sidney political works were elucidated, as well as the problems of tolerance and freedom of conscience in the political literature of XVI century England and XVIII century France. The main points of the views of Italian lawyer of XVI cent. G. Panziroli and geographical knowledge of Swiss erudite I.W. Stuckius were demonstrated. Byzantine studies at the historical faculty of ONU were renewed. The military and political history of Byzantium at XI-XIII cent. was studied, especially the role of foreign mercenary contingents in Byzantine foreign policy on its European vector, and also historical thought of that time. Contribution of Odessa society of history and antiquities, Saint-Petersburg archeological-numismatic society and archeological institute were also examined. Results of the researches were introduced into the academic process in the ONU historical faculty.
