For electrically or mechanically excited vibration of the elements consisting of piezoactive and electrically passive layers, failure can occur according with two scenarios: depolarization of the piezomaterial due to overheating above the Curie temperature for the piezomaterial or fracture due to thermal degradation of the mechanical properties of the materials. Scenarios are investigated for the case of forced vibration of the members with typical lay-up for the functional elements: three layer structure consisting of core electrically passive layer and outer piezoactive layers. An essentially nonlinear dynamic coupled problem of thermomechanics for multilayer elements is formulated with making use of the assumptions of electrostatics and generalized Kirchhoff-Love hypotheses. For harmonic loading in the resonance region, a simplified monoharmonic model of the material response is used along with the concept of the complex moduli to characterize the inelastic cyclic properties of the materials. Regularities of the field variables distributions, evolution of temperature and the serviceability loss are studied numerically. Safe configurations and functioning regimes for elements under electrical or mechanical loading as well as temperature evolution under active control of vibration are determined.
