With the use of electron microscopy, Raman and EPR spectroscopy in combination with theoretical calculations established correlation between the local structure and the parameters of the EPR spectra of coal, and its composition and energy content, which formed on the geological times under the influence of tectonic processes. It was the first time established that the presence of narrow and broad signals in the EPR spectra of natural coals indicates the presence of two types of carbon atoms with unsaturated bonds - narrow lines attributed to free radicals in the one-dimensional carbon molecules, wide lines - dangling bonds on the aromatic molecules in the carbon clusters. Data were obtained on the role of iron compounds in the formation of methane in the carbon layers and their impact on the risk of gas-dynamic phenomena (GDP). It was the first time obtained new Raman bands in the coal samples, which are corresponds of outburst coal deposits. Conducted experiments to elucidate the mechanisms GDP for their control and reduce accidents in the mines.
