The main objective of this project is to investigate the mechanisms of recovery from radiation damage, which operate during irradiation but are usually obscured by the concurrent process of defect creation. The most significant result of the project is the development and experimental verification of a new concept of the radiation-induced production of Schottky defects, which often act in the opposite direction to that of the mechanisms based on Frenkel pair production in the bulk. The significance of this concept for the forecasting of the radiation stability of materials is that the radiation-induced production of Schottky defects, in contrast to the Frenkel defect production, results in the radiation-induced void shrinkage, i.e. "radiation-induced annealing" . This technologically important phenomenon have been experimentally confirmed in the present project.
