The purpose is a constructing of the thermodynamic theory to describe the nonequilibrium processes in the ultrathin lubricant film that take place in boundary friction mode and a describing of the results of known experiments based on this theory. The goal is to explain the mechanism of stick-slip boundary friction regime which is observed in the experiments and to explain the differences for the dry friction regime without lubrication. The research method is the theoretical analysis based on the system of rheological equations and the Landau theory of phase transitions, the methods of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and theory of elasticity. Thermodynamic model that describes a broad class of the phenomena observed in the boundary friction for the nanoscale tribological systems has been built. Two types of the boundary friction mechanisms within two types of the thermodynamic theories, nonequilibrium evolutional thermodynamic theory and simplified equilibrium approximation, have been described. The results of both approaches are compared between themselves and with the known experiments. The mechanism of stick-slip friction mode has been investigated.
