Increased expression levels of CHI3L1 and CHI3L2 genes can serve as new molecular markers of glial tumors. It was revealed that CHI3L1 activates ERK1/ERK2 phosphorylation thus initiated MAPK-signaling cascade. It was shown the influence of CHI3L2 and CHI3L1 on the duration of cellular MAPK-signaling and translocation pf phosphorylated ERK1/2 into nucleus. According to the results of the in vitro and in vivo investigations, CHI3L1 is a real oncoprotein which converts immortlized 293 cells into malignanly transformed cells. Gene expression signature of the glioblastoma was obtained and successfully applied for the clasterization of ther astrocytic gliomas of malignancy grades I-IV using Kohonen self-organizing maps (SOM).
