Goals and objectives: to develop a classification of habitats in Kyiv, identify rare types, to assess the energy potential of the natural habitat of Kyiv, their structural and functional characteristics; to assess possible damages from the loss of natural habitats. Methods, which was used: route survey (identification of habitat types), forestry methods (forest taxation, biometric measurements, evaluation of litter), charting (mapping sites in ArcMap (ESRI)), assessment of environmental losses (Didukh, Rasevich, Gavrilov, 2009). The 138 types of natural and devastated habitats were identified, including 25 rare habitats. A new approach of assessing the significance of natural habitats was elaborated. According the proposed method of environmental losses assessment the costs of 120 years old oak forest is 4570,000 UAH/ha, of 60 years old pine forests is 2713,000 UAH/ha, of mesic meadow is 1680,000 UAH/ha and eutrophic aquatic habitats is 966,000 UAH/ ha. The obtained values for forest ecosystems is 4 and 2.5 times higher than the charges approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for damages caused to the forest.
