Deformation, "force" and energy stability criteria are obtained. Analytical model for formation and evolution of the zones of irreversible deformations around mine workings is developed. Experimental proof of the obtained criteria is made. Based on the analysis of disturbances of deformation stress fields it is determined that during development of geomechanical processes normal general tension stresses around mine workings are generated. These tension stresses are the main factor of instability. Based on the analysis of experimental data, determined mechanisms of instability around mine workings and the obtained stability criteria methods and means of improving their stability and also methods of control of stress-deformation state are developed. Selection of effective parameters for conducting longwall work is made.
