Project aim – To establish the patterns of the range limits for chromosome aberration yield in lymphocytes of cancer patients undergoing external therapeutic gamma-irradiation, and to determine the prognostic value for cytogenetic damage as clinically meaningful markers during radiotherapy. Methods and equipment – Conventional cytogenetic analysis af cultured human blood lymphocytes, statistical methods of data treatment, light microscopes Biolam I, Axioskop, Micros MC 300X. Results: The changes of cytogenetic parameters were quantified in uterine and ovarian cancer patients during radiotherapy. The regressions were derived for expressing the in vivo increase of chromosome aberration frequencies in patients. The chromosome damage accumulation rate varied between patients up to 23 times. The association between acute radiation clinical effects and radiation-induced cytogenetic damage yield in gynecological cancer patients was assessed. Novelty: For the first time patterns of the cytogenetic damage yield range and the individual variability of the chromosome aberration accumulation kinetics were assessed in ovarian and uterine cancer patients depending on schemes of radiotherapy used. For the first time the external radiotherapy, intraceliac brachytherapy and a combination of these two methods were compared for genotoxicity regarding the induction of chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes of gynecological cancer patients.
