The aim of the investigation is the developing of the theory of friction on the mesoscopic scale. The theory is developed with the help of the earthquakelike model using the master equation approach. In the investigation the following results were obtained: We investigated friction at the mesoscopic scale, when it occurs due to rupture and formation of local contacts. We show that the process can be described by the master equation that can be solved analytically. The role of temperature and aging of contacts has been studied, as well as the statistical properties of contacts in various cases of friction, including the sticking-slip regime, were studied. We found the dependence of the kinetic friction on the sliding velocity, which is due to two competing processes - thermal fluctuations, leading to the increase of friction force with speed, and the aging of contacts, which reduces friction with speed.
