The aim of the investigation is the developing of the theory of friction on the mesoscopic scale. The theory is developed with the help of the earthquakelike model using the master equation approach. In the investigation the following results were obtained: (i) It is shown that the breaking and formation of local contacts can be described by a master equation, which can be solved analytically in some cases and provides an efficient numerical solution for more general cases. (ii) The effect of temperature and aging of the contacts on the friction is described, and the complete dependence of the kinetic friction force on the driving velocity and system temperature has been found. (iii) The role of the long-range elastic interaction between the contacts inside an inhomogeneous frictional interface was studied, and it is shown that the interaction produces a characteristic elastic correlation length, below which the slider may be considered as a rigid body, while above it the interaction leads to screening of local perturbations in the interface, or to appearance of collective modes. (iv) A multiscale model for the propagation of rupture fronts in friction was introduced and investigated. The problem of the dynamics of a chain of the effective contacts under stress is studied, and it is shown that it can be reduced to an analog of the Frenkel-Kontorova model, which allows us to derive analytical solutions for the solitonic wave describing the rupture fronts. All obtained results are new and published in leading international physical journals. The results may be used in developing lubricant in nanomashines.
