A classical problem of a flow around a circular cylinder was used a basis for the development of passive and active flow-control methods applicable for blunt bodies. Symmetric and asymmetric excitation of a boundary layer was studied using O-ring and spherical vortex-generators. A prospective approach to active flow control was planned based on the application of distributed thermal fields generated by arrays of localized plasma discharges. Obtained results showed correlation between space scales of initiated vortices and a possibility to improve the aerodynamic performance of a blunt body. These fundamental results can be applied in aviation and automobile industries that will reduce the fuel consumption and, as a consequence, the environment pollution with carbon and nitrogen oxides.
